The Negritude movement, launched by black students in Paris in the 1930s and 1940s, has played an important role in raising black consciousness and fighting against colonialism to socially emancipate black people. It has also laid a solid founda- tion for what is called today the Francophone African literature and Caribbean literature. Writings by Negritude writers have profoundly shaped the landscape of contemporary black literature. Striving to showcase a distinctive black culture, Negritude writers tend to present themes and styles different from those in classical French literature. Their works have actually participated in constructing a black African cultural identity, which, though marked by a strong historicity, managed to exert its great influence. In the context of contemporary postcolonial studies, these masterpieces still call for a new and more nuanced interpretation.
