In 1928, Zhang Yuanji spent one and a half months in Japan searching for the Chinese ancient books. He visited the public and private libraries in Tokyo and Kyoto, and, unprecedentedly, saw many valuable books, while the process of photocopying was complicated, and number of titles of successful borrowing, which could be considered as a gorgeous event in Sino-Japan cultural exchange. By his sufficient preparation, his arduous work in deciding, borrowing, photocopying and negotiating, and with the help of many friendly sinologists in Japan, he has achieved a great success. The result showed that he borrowed and photocopyied 61 titles of Chinese ancient books of rare copy, and most titles among which were "long-time lost in China proper". Later, these rare books were edited into Zhang's big sets of ancient classics series, so that these rare books which had dispersed overseas for several hundred years could re-emerge in their homeland, and merged again in the history and memory of Chinese nationality. In this case, the event is so significant, not only for the value of edition, but also, more importantly, for its relationship to restoring the national memory and re-constructing our national spirit.
