Objective To study the comfortable grip force and maximum grip force of human upper limb in reachable domain. Methods According to the distribution of Chinese adults' height,510 subjects( 250 males and 260 females) were selected to participate in the experiment based on typical grip operation. Grip forces from different joint angles including 30° shoulder joint extension,0°,30°,60°,90°,120°,150°,180°shoulder flexion angles were measured. Results The mean and standard deviation of comfortable grip force values( in N) were 30 ± 16 for males, and 27 ± 15 for males, respectively. The mean and standard deviation of maximum grip force for non-dominant and dominant hands were 302 ± 77 and 326 ± 82 for males, and 198 ±73 and 214 ± 79 for females, respectively. The mean comfortable strength was about 10% of the mean maximum strength for males, and the ratio for female was about 14%. There was evident correlation between volunteers' height and the grip force. Conclusion By studying the grip force data of specific working postures, reference may be provided for ergonomic design of products used in space or on the ground.
