摘　　要：世界书局的创办人沈知方虽是民国出版业的巨擘,但其早期生涯却隐晦不彰。沈知方曾祖一代为藏书家沈复粲昆仲,此后世代以书为业。沈知方早年在绍兴奎照楼学徒,后进入上海广益书局,成为老书坊里的杰出人才。1902年前后,沈知方进入商务印书馆从事发行工作,直到1912年底离开。在此期间,沈知方1905年主持乐群书局,与夏瑞芳进行教科书诉讼;又创办国学扶轮社,出版百科全书《普通百科新大辞典》,编纂大型文集《国朝文汇》,显示出卓越的选题眼光和浓厚的文化情怀。As the founder of the World Book Co.,Ltd,Shen Zhifang is a giant in the Republic of China Publishing,but his early career has not been presented in detail.Shen Zhifang＇s great grandfather generation is Shen Fucan,and from then on,his family took books as enterprise.In the early years,Shen Zhifang was an apprentice in Kui Zhao Publishing House,and after that he entered the Shanghai Guangyi Bookstore,becoming an outstanding talent in the old bookshop.Around 1902,Shen Zhifang joined The Commercial Press,engaging in distribution work,and leaved until the end of 1912.During this period,Shen Zhifang took charge of Lequn Publishing Company,and made the lawsuit of textbook against Xia Qianfang.He also established Sinology Rotary Club,and published an encyclopedia Ordinary Encyclopedia New Dictionary,compiled large collection Guochao Wen Hui.All these publishing works showed his excellent ability of topic-selecting and strong cultural feelings,which became his representative works of the early time.
