摘　　要：戴维·赫伯特·劳伦斯(1885—1930年)是20世纪英国文学史上著名的现代主义作家。其著名的短篇小说《马贩子的女儿》描述了在工业迅速发展的背景下,由于受到极致的压迫,人们表现出的对外界的冷漠、无知和对命运的无能为力。小说运用象征主义手法生动地刻画出丰满的人物形象,并分别赋予水、火、马等深层涵义,不仅故事情节的跌宕起伏引发读者的想象力,而且增强了作品的感染力。D. H. Lawrence （1885-1930） is a famous modernist writer in the history of British literature in 20th century. His famous short story The Horse Dealer’s Daughter reflected the indifference and ignorance of the world, and incompetence of fate displayed by people under various depressions with the rapid industrial development. The novel uses symbolism to vividly depict the full characters, and endows the deep meaning of water, fire, horse and so on, not only the ups and downs of the story plot, but also the imagination of the reader and the appeal of the work.
