Language is an important lens to observe the sociocultural effects of tourism on tourist destinations. The tourism linguistic landscape is constructed mainly for economic ends, and the economic instrumentality often obscures the language rights underlying the language practice on signage. This paper seeks to take a macro sociolinguistic perspective to analyze the social reality hidden behind tourism linguistic landscape. It shows that tourism can have a significant impact on the language situation in tourist destinations. The linguistic landscape in tourism can render many informational and symbolic meanings, and the linguistic commodification, the authenticity of language representation, the hegemony of English, the social status of linguistic minorities and their languages are all scoped into tourism linguistic landscape studies. The construction of tourism linguistic landscape shall accommodate the tourists' semiotic needs and the language rights of local minorities. This overview may inform the tourism linguistic landscape study in China, and serve as a reference for policymakers in the tourism landscape management and planning.
