摘　　要：欧文·白璧德是20世纪初美国"新人文主义"运动的首倡者与奠基人。他主张批判、实证的精神,对西方文艺复兴以来的浪漫主义文学进行了反拨。白璧德推崇古典文学,看重古典文学中理性与想象、道德与审美的结合,但他并非主张回归古代。他认为,文学的发展必然要古今融合,是古典精神的恢复与现代文化之间的调和,这也是其在"一"与"多"之间保持均衡的哲学思想的文学表现。Irving Babbitt is the founder of the American New Humanism Movement in the early 20 th century. He advocated the spirit of criticism and positivism, and provided a counterpoint to Romantic literature since the Western Renaissance. He promoted classical literature, and emphasized the combination of rationality and imagination, and morality and aesthetics in classical literature, but he did not call for a return to ancient times. He argued that the development of literature should be a fusion of the ancient and modern, a recovery of the classical spirit, and a reconciliation among modern cultures.This attitude also is the literary representation of his philosophy to keep balance between ＂the one＂ and ＂the many.＂
