Objective To observe and compare the clinical efficacy of scattered versus direct bee sting needling at acupoints in treating rheumatoid arthritis. Method Seventy-two patients with rheumatoid arthritis were randomized to treatment and control groups, with 36 cases in each group. The treatment group received scattered bee sting needling at acupoints and the control group received direct bee sting needling at acupoints. In both groups, treatment was given three times a week, two weeks as a course, for two courses. After two courses, the changes in the degree of joint pain [Visual Analogue Scale(VAS) score], the number of painful joints, and the index of joint dysfunction in the two groups were observed, and the clinical efficacies of the two groups were compared. Result After the treatment, the VAS score, the number of painful joints, and the index of joint dysfunction changed significantly in both groups(P〈0.05). There were no significant inter-group differences in the VAS score, the number of painful joints, and the Index of joint dysfunction(P〈0.05). The total efficacy rate was 88.9% in the treatment group and 91.7% in the control group; there was no statistically significant difference between the two groups(P〈0.05). Conclusion Both scattered and direct bee sting needling at acupoints can ameliorate the degree of joint pain, the number of painful joints, and the index of joint dysfunction in rheumatoid arthritis. Scattered bee sting needling at acupoints is easier for the patients to accept.
