Based on the multi-state life table model and data from the Tracking Survey on the Living Conditions of China's Urban and Rural Older Persons(2006 and 2010), this paper analyzed the impact of marital status on the healthy life expectancy of the elderly in China. Results show that 64.61% of the elderly aged 60 years or above have a spouse, and those with a spouse have longer healthy life expectancy than those without one(unmarried, divorced or widowed): for the 60-year-old, 20.28 vs. 16.55 years; for the 70-year-old, 10.12 vs. 8.63 years; for the 80-year-old,4.15 v.s. 3.28 years; for the 90-year-old, 3.03 vs. 1.53 years. The proportion of healthy life expectancy in the total lifespan for the elderly with a spouse is higher than that for older people without one. Marital status also has an impact on healthy life expectancy of the elderly, affecting their quality of life. We should, therefore, create the conditions for improving the marital status and health of the elderly in china.
