ObjectiveTo investigate the effects of exercise and dietary intervention on mild and moderate non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) in submariners during prolonged voyage.MethodsTwenty-two submariners diagnosed to have mild or moderate NAFLD by ultrasonography from supply ship crew of the 26th escort vessel deployed in the Gulf of Aden were selected as research subjects. Exercise and dietary intervention was implemented during the prolonged escort mission for 8 months. Changes in ultrasonographic imaging, body weight, body fat rate, body mass index (BMI) and liver function were closely observed before deployment, and 4 and 8 months after prolonged deployment.ResultsAfter exercise and dietary intervention such indexes as body weight, body fat rate, BMI, alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and aspartate aminotransferase (AST) all decreased significantly, when detections were made during the mid stage (4 months) and end stage (8 months), and statistical differences could be seen when comparisons were made(P〈0.05). Morphology by ultrasonography indicated that 22 cases of NALFD all improved significantly, with an improvement rate of 100%.ConclusionsDuring prolonged deployment at sea, proper exercise and dietary intervention could produce good effects on the submariners with NAFLD, and help to improve the health status of submariners.
