El Nino Southern Oscillation (ENSO),as an important indicator of global air sea interaction, has received much attention from the academic world in the past century. Many indicators have been defined to describe ENSO phenomena accurately. In real correlation studies, the teleconnection coefficients of both SOI and MEI with precipitation runoff are mostly lower than 0.1,which can not accurately reflect the impact of ENSO on hydrological climate.A new ENSO index was defined to improve the correlation between ENSO and actual data, and was compared with Southern Oscillation Index (SOI) and Multivariate ENSO index (MEI) to determine the reliability of the index. The sea surface temperature difference (SSTD) of the nearby waters of Tahiti Island(130°~155°W,4°~10°N) and of Port Darwin(90°~150°W,4°S~4°N) was selected as a new ENSO index.Correlation analysis was conducted between the index and global runoff data. The results showed that, compared with SOI and MEI,the correlation of SSTD with runoff increased by 0.9-4.2 times.
