摘　　要：认知诗学的图形—背景理论有助于从新的角度发掘小说的主题内涵和艺术特征。帕特里克·怀特小说《人树》中的意象突显和主旨突显体现了图形和背景的变化和形成。作家通过意象的聚焦及叙事手法、语言表达的偏离实现了图形的突显,即在深化主题内涵的同时,表达了作家的情感意蕴和创作意图。The theory of figure and ground is helpful to discover the theme and the aesthetic values of the novel from a new perspective. The imagery prominence and purport prominence in Patrick White＇s The Tree of Man embody the change and formation of the figure and ground. Through the focalization of the imagery and the alienation of narrative techniques and language expressions,he successfully achieves the prominence of figure,which expresses his emotion and creative intention while deepening the connotation of the theme.
