Objective To examine the methadone dosage and its associated factors in heroin - dependent patients receiving methadone maintenance treatment (MMT) in Wuhan. Methods A total of 549 heroin - dependent patients of three MMT clinics in Wuhan completed the socio - demographic and clinical characteristics questionnaire. Methadone dosage and body mass index (BMI) were collected and calculated, and then pain intensity was assessed with the five -point verbal rating scale. Results The average MMT dosage was (70.4±29.2) mg/d. The proportion of patients taking a high dosage of methadone (≥60 mg/d) was 59%. In multiple linear regression, being aged 20 -39 years, normal BMI, overweight and obesity in BMI, fair/poor interpersonal relationship, injecting heroin, duration of heroin use 〉 10 years, anxiety and pain were significantly associated with a high dosage of methadone. Conclusion The methadone dosage of heroin - dependent patients in MMT clinics in Wuhan is relatively high. Socio - demographic, clinical and psychological factors need to be taken into consideration when determining the dosage of methadone for heroin - dependent patients.
