摘　　要：中国参加世博会,经历了由精明的商人自发参加、委托由赫德担任总税务司的中国海关全权组织、中国海关组织参会和华商自发组团共同参与、由中国官员组织民间广泛参与几个阶段。从1851年第一届世博会上就出现的湖州元素——辑里湖丝,到1930年褚民谊担任比利时列日世博会中国代表团团长,湖州人在这之中发挥了至关重要的作用。文章通过对晚清民国期间湖州元素、湖州人参与历届世博会的梳理,从一个侧面反映了中国近代从蒙昧走向文化自觉、民族和经济自主意识的觉醒的过程。Chinese participation in the World Expo has gone through several stages, from spontaneous participation by shrewd businessmen, full powers of the Customs of China entrusted by Hurd as the General Tax Department, participation of the Customs Organization of China and spontaneous group of Chinese businessmen to extensive participation by Chinese officials and non governmental organizations. From the first World Expo in 1851 to 1930, Huzhou people served as the head of the Chinese delegation to the World Expo in Liege, Belgium. Huzhou people played a vital role in this. Event by sorting out Huzhou elements and Huzhou people’s participation in previous World Expos during the late Qing and Republic of China, the article reflects from one side of the awakening process from ignorance to cultural consciousness, national and economic autonomy in modern China.
