The artificial fractures were on the left radius of 30 healthy male New Zealand white rabbits. Two levels of He-Ne laser energy density (6.24J/cm2 and 31.2J/cm2) were used for irradiating the area of fracture. Five biochemical indexs in the blood of the rabbits were determind during the experiment, they are the concentration of red blood cell and hemoglobin, the activity of serum alkaline phosphatase and the concentration of serum calcium and serum hydroxyproline. Fracture healing was evaluated with X-ray. Some biomechanical parameters of the bone were alse tested after the clinical union of the bones. The experimental results showed that the laser irradiation would induce an increase in the concentration of serum calcium and hydroxyproline, and a decrease in the concentration of red blood cell. The activity of serum alkaline phosphatase was inhibited by the irradiation of 3l.2J/cm2 but not affected by the irradiation of 6.24J/cm2. While the concentration of hemoglobin was decreased by the irradiation of lower level but not affected by the higher level one. In the biomechamical testing, it was found that the flexibility of the clinically union bone was improved while the tensility was not. Generally, both levels of the laser irradiation could stimulate the fracture healing, but the effect of the lower level one seems stronger.
