The introduction of horse racing into Shanghai and the creation of Shanghai Race Club actually became a display window showing the achievement of modern sports to China and a channel of propagating modern sportsmanship. In fact, the course that Chinese people sought after the races was just the process that they did not only break away from the bound of orthodoxy that horse racing was nonetheless and depraved, but also accepted the nurture of west modern competitive sportsmanship and further identified with the embedding of west achieved culture. Therefore, news of horse racing was able to publish into the initial issue of Shun Pao as the headline and report on the papers of the late Qing Dynasty.Horse racing was not just a sport, but also the form of political wrangling which the west showed off their power. The passion of Shanghai people for racing implied their cultural desire on making China prosperous and powerful.Just because Shanghai was a settlement, this kind of desire was more intense than in other places. It just displayed a unique local knowledge.
