范海斯的现代大学观及其办学实践

摘　　要：范海斯于1904年出任美国威斯康星大学校长,长校十五年。其间,他遵循高等教育的规律和美国社会的价值观,根据威斯康星大学的州立性质,确立了自己的大学理念,致力于办一所既不同于哈佛、耶鲁那样的古典学院,也不同于霍普金斯式的研究型大学的新型现代州立大学。为此,他理性地维护大学学术自由的核心理念,为实现民主管理,扩大教师的权力,引导学生自治;同时努力引导大学走出象牙塔,拓展大学的边界,强调大学的社会服务职能,由此确立了"威斯康星理念"。在范海斯的努力之下,威斯康星大学成为一所新型的现代州立大学,直至今日仍被誉为"范海斯的大学"。范海斯是美国州立大学校长的标志性人物,他的大学思想及其办学实践,至今仍不失其现实意义。Van Hise served as president of the University of Wisconsin(UW)in Madison from1904to1918.At the beginning of his inaugural,abiding by the law of higher education and the value of American society,analyzing the distinguished feature of Wisconsin,he put forward the ideal of setting up a modern university which is neither same with classical academies like Harvard nor research university like Johns-Hopkins.Therefore,he preserved the core idea of university:academic freedom,and implemented democratic management,including emphasizing^teacher is the focus of the university”,expanding teacher9s power and advocating student9s self-government,guiding student to supervise students9affairs.Besides,he guided Wisconsin university to go out the ivory tower and emphasized the social service function of university,which formed the“Wisconsin Idea”.With his efforts,Wisconsin became a modern university,and in nowadays,it is still praised as“Van Hise's university”.And as a representative president,Van Hise's modern views on university and school-running experience still have profound significance.
