《斯通纳》:危机之中的大学精神坚守

摘　　要：美国作家约翰·威廉斯的长篇小说《斯通纳》以主人公斯通纳在大学求学和任教的经历为主要情节,叙述了斯通纳在此过程中的追求、困顿与抗争。这一切均发生在20世纪上半期美国接连卷入战争和经济大萧条等社会危机背景之下。通过历史叙事与小说叙事并置、现实危机与虚构危机交错的文本构建,《斯通纳》将社会危机与大学危机进行有效联结,进而对大学危机进行了全方位呈现:学术标准失守,学者的独立判断被剥夺,教学改革受挫,学术领地渐失。在此危机之下,以斯通纳为代表的学者们通过对大学日常的种种不懈坚持,表达出对大学精神的坚定守护。American writer John Willians's novel Stoner,whose plot is mainly about the protagonist Stoner’s university study and teaching experience,narrates Stoner’s pursuit,trouble and struggle in his career.All these happened in the first hall ol the 20th century,when America was constantly involved in crisises ol wars and the Great Depression.By putting historical events and fictional events side by side,Stoner has managed to link the social crisis with university crisis,exhibiting a comprehensive display of the latter,such as the loss of academic standardsands,the loss of scholars’independence in academic issues,and the frustration in teaching reform.Under such circumstances,the protagonist Stoner and some other scholars’insistence in their lives has effectively expressed their sincere persistence of university spirit.
