摘　　要：在文学作品中,象征主义手法的运用可以体现作品的深度和隐含意义,它常被用来代表作者的道德观、价值观或宗教信仰。霍桑在他的小说中成功地使用了象征主义手法,使他的小说《红字》成为不朽的著作,尤其是具有象征意义的字母"A"给女主人公注入了生命力。本文试通过分析红字"A"意义发生的变化来讨论《红字》中的字母"A"象征意义的多义性。Symbolism in literature reflects the deepness and hidden meaning in a piece of works.It is often used to represent a moral or religious belief or value.Hawthorne successfully uses the symbolism device in his novel and makes his novel“The Scarlet Letter”become an immortal famous work.Hawthorn’s symbolism,especially the symbolic letter“A”helps add vitality into the heroine.This paper attempts to discuss the diversity of symbolism in this novel by analyzing the changing symbolic meanings of the scarlet letter“A”.
