Lan'an Township of Luding County has a long history, its rise and fall is closely related to the Sichuan-Tibetan Tea-horse Trail, which is a corridor of economic, political and cultural exchanges between Tibetans and Hans. It is historically played an important positive role. During the Tang Dynasty, Lan'an was named Luoyan, but Yanzhou in the Song Dynasty, Mingzhou in the Qing Dynasty, and finally Lan'an during the Republic of China. During the Ming Dynasty, Lan'an developed into a prosperous town between Sichuan and Tibet. In the Qing Dynasty the Sichuan-Tibet Tea-horse Trail was diverted, then circumnavigated by Pengba (a village near the Luding Bridge) due to the completion of the Luding Bridge in 1706. So to explore the Sichuan-Tibetan Tea-horse Trail and the historical towns along the trail is of great significance to the study of the ethnic and historical culture around the Dadu River Basin.
