In Shakespeare’s works, the line of “wearing the horns of cuckold” is very common, which symbolizes the mockery to the husband whose wife was unfaithful to them at that time. The origins of this expression are various, and it was widely accepted in Britain during the Elizabethan period. The wide use of this expression in Shakespeare’s works shows the social features of that time from different angles. First of all, the audience in Renaissance had great interest in the pornographic implication represented by “wearing the horns”, which was used to cater to the needs of the audience. Secondly,“wearing the horns” was the common words that the young people used when they had a joke with each other in daily life at that time, which reflects the lift of limitation in culture. However, by investigating the core,“wearing the horns” is a gratuitous suspicion to women. As appendage of male, women were still in a lower social status at that time.
