摘　　要：从20世纪初开始,娼业逐渐从大城市和省会城市扩散到那些由于新铁路和工业扩张而快速发展起来的地方小城镇。河北平原中部高阳的妓女就是由于乡村织布业的发展而迅速增加的。与大城市相比,高阳的妓女主要有以下几个特征:一是多为暗娼,不像大城市有专门的“红灯区”,而是分布在城里的后街或城外的小村中;二是大部分是由于年龄偏大,在大城市没有竞争优势才转向小城镇的;三是具有独立性身份,更便于流动。高阳县政府对暗娼采取“不闻不问”的态度,主要是因为不想得罪她们的某些主顾,甚至需要她们向特定主顾提供服务,如过境军队。军队和保安部队会向妓女提供一些非官方的保护,但也会对她们造成侵扰。By the early twentieth century the sex trade had spread from the large cities and provincial capitals into smaller prefectural cities and towns that were experiencing rapid development as a result of new railroad lines and industrial expansion. Gaoyang-a small town at the center of Hebei Plain-grew rapidly as the result of the development of the rural weaving industry. Compared with large cities, the prostitution in Gaoyang had these features: firstly they were mostly “ clandestine prostitutes ”, operated in small settlements outside the city walls, or on narrow back streets within the walled tow n, which was different from those in big cities which were gathered together in a special licensed district;secondly, they were mostly those whose age made them less competitive in large cities and were compelled to move to small towns;third, they were mostly independent, and hence easy to move. The Gaoyang county government took a “ D on’t look, don’t ask” attitude toward the unlicensed prostitutes, mostly because they did not want to offend some of their clients, or they even needed clandestine prostitutes to meet the demands of some specific customers, like military forces passing through the county. Military forces or security forces might provide some unofficial protect to those prostitutes, but also sometimes bothers to them.
