Activated sludge process is the most widely used sewage treatment technology. However, it will generate a large amount of sludge during the sewage treatment process. The cost of the sludge treatment accounts for about 50% of the operating cost of sewage treatment plant. The effects of uncoupler methyl paraben on sludge reduction and sewage treatment were investigated. The results showed that the optimized concentration of methyl paraben for sludge reduction was 1 mg/L, which achieved 38. 0% sludge reduction efficiency. Under the optimized methyl paraben concentration, the average removal rates of COD and PO4^3-- P increased from 88. 10% and 48. 14% in the blank group to 90. 41 % and 53. 91 %, respectively;while the average removal rate of NH4^+- N and TN decreased slightly from 82. 95% and 55. 20% to 82. 48% and 53. 12%;meanwhile the sludge kept good settleability during the sewage treatment process. Consequently , achieving sludge reduction via dosing of methyl paraben was an economical approach with promising application potentials.
