元表征视角下《白噪音》精神困境的诠释

摘　　要：《白噪音》展现了后现代群体的精神困境——生活符号化与无处可逃的死亡恐惧。各色人物对消费社会中符号的表征来源丧失辨别能力,展现了个体元表征能力退化、生活符号化的趋势。受死亡恐惧的支配,人物元表征能力的丧失,无法准确追踪表征的来源,从而将主观想法当成客观事实。作者对后现代人群的精妙塑造体现在通过元表征组建的多层嵌入式意向中,这些嵌入式意向性不断挑战读者的元表征能力,增加阅读难度,体现了作者的巧思和文本的精妙。“White Noise”shows the spiritual predicament of postmodern people,namely the confusion and the inescapable fear of death. Postmodern people fail to monitor the source of representations in diverse slogans in the huge consumption society,which reveals the degeneration of metarepresentational ability and symbolization of life. In the grip of the fear of death,people in White Noise fail to keep the track of the source of representations, deeming the ideas in their mind as the reality,which shows their temporary lost of metarepresentational ability and the tendency of schizophrenia. Besides, the author sketches the mental state of postmodern people through embedded intentionalities that consist of numerous meta-representations. Embedded intentionalities continuously challenge reader’s meta-representational ability and increase the difficulty of reading and at the meantime reveal the sophistication and subtlety of the text.
