Their design for the facade of the Folkwang University of the Arts in Essen consists of hot-dip galvanized steel and glass. In choosing the shape they allowed themselves to be guided by the urban development and architecture of the Zeche Zollverein colliery, lining up cubes of different sizes with incised courtyards and atriums.The elongated ensemble is structured by projections and recesses. While the conventional glazing is impermeable in the insulation level, the planners arranged the outer impact pane layer, which protects the Venetian blinds in the form of aluminium slats from wind and weather, on a level with the facade pan els. Between the 3 mm-thick cladding of fire-retardant galvanized steel and the impact glass panes, which are framed with a dark U-profile, there is a gap of 6 cm.
