It is a widely-held view by Japanese scholars of Yasunari Kawabata that he adopted a detached attitude towards WWII.Indulging in Japanese classic literature,Kawabata neither praised nor criticized the war and was a cautious follower of moderatism. However, extensive examinations of relevant materials show that Kawabata had participated in military-related ac tivities to please the Japanese authorities.By exploring Kawabata's two visits to Puppet Manchukuo and his position as a report er of the Japanese Special Attack Units, this essay demonstrates how his views towards the war changed from confused, advo cating, doubting to disavowal during 1937-1945.Kawabata's military experience left an indelible imprint on him, which signifi cantly affected his writing after WWII and his views towards life and death.
