Among the ancient Greek tragedians, Aeschylus was recognized as one of the tragic poets who had the strongest sense of modernity in his works by western academia. His representative tragic work was Oresteian Trilogy, which included Agamemnon. It was regarded as an important beginning of the modernity of western tragedy in terms of the innovation of tragic art forms and the openness of tragic thought and content. It also had a direct and profound impact on Mourning Becomes Electra, the masterpiece of American modern theatre written by Eugene O’Neill, "the father of American modern theatre", and The Flies, the classic existentialist theatre written by Jean-Paul Sartre, French modern philosopher and writer. The significant distinctions between Mourning Becomes Electra and The Flies in their characters and themes also showed the diversity and pluralism of the influences that the ancient Greek tragedy represented by Aeschylus gave to the 20 th century western modern theatre.
