摘　　要：本文对英汉词组单位之传统语法、形式主义及功能主义语言学视角的相关研究进行梳理。结果表明:不同时期,各个流派对词组的认识和重视程度有所不同。传统语法没有统一的语言学理论作为指导,对词组单位的描述不够充分。形式主义语言学在句法分析时主要从形式入手,并采用二分原则,从而造成了词组与其他句法单位的界限不够明晰。功能主义语言学强调语言研究以意义为导向,同时重视意义的体现形式,因而句法分析采取多分原则。认知功能学派擅长对具体词组的描写和解释,而对词组的整体认识尚有待加强;系统功能学派强调句法单位的等级构成关系,对词组的整体描写较为系统。两者在词组的描写和解释方面各有侧重,因此本文认为两者的结合应有益于词组及其他句法单位的描述和阐释。This paper aims to provide an overview of studies of English and Chinese groups from the perspectives of traditional grammar, formal linguistics and functional linguistics. The result shows that different schools have distinct understandings of groups. Due to the lack of guidance by a comprehensive and systematic linguistic theory,the descriptions of groups seem to be immature in traditional grammar. Within the framework of formal linguistics, confusion arises concerning the relationship between groups and other grammatical units, which results from the unequal stress on language form and the binary principle in syntax analysis. Unlike the formal perspectives, functional linguistics takes meaningoriented approaches to language. Cognitive linguistics prefers to investigate individual groups – and this results in an incomprehensive description of groups as a whole whereas systemic functional linguistics lays stress on hierarchical constitutive relations among units – and this helps to present a systematic description of groups. Hence, cognitive linguistics is believed to be more powerful in explaining the realization relationship between the meaning expressed in groups and our experience of the world, and systemic functional linguistics seems to be more convincing in the description of the relationship between groups and other units. Thereupon, this paper suggests that future studies of groups could be guided by systemic functional linguistics on the one hand and by cognitive linguistics on the other.
