摘　　要：美国现代小说家亨利·詹姆斯的中篇小说《学生》主要描写了美国人家摩林一家与其子摩根的私人教师彭伯顿的故事,其悲剧收尾体现了社会大环境下美国人的道德败坏和文明的贫瘠。亨利·詹姆斯对于19世纪中后期的美国社会和欧洲社会的细致观察和深刻理解,都可透过小说中的物理空间、社会空间和精神空间得以展现。在欧洲文明的背景下,詹姆斯笔下人物滑稽的经历对陷于拜金狂流中的美国社会起到了劝导和警示作用。The Pupil, a novella written by Henry James, a modern American novelist, it described the story of the Moreens and their son Morgan’s tutor Pemberton. The tragic ending of the novel reflected the moral corruption and the poverty of civilization of Americans under the social environment at that time. Henry James’s detailed observation and profound understanding of American and European society could be demonstrated through the physical space, social space and spiritual space in the novel. In the context of European civilization, the comical experiences of James’s protagonists served as a caution for the money-worship American society.
