The beast figure curved into a ring is one of the most characteristic subjects in the art of early nomadic tribes across the Eurasian steppe. In recent years, there have appeared rather early examples in the east of this region. The plaque with curved-into-ring-shaped leopard design from the royal barrow at Arzhan in Tuva dates from the early 8th century BC. The tiger, leopard and other beast figures curved into rings discovered in the Upper Xiajiadian culture can be assigned as early as 9th^8th centuries BC. Such designs, however, have not seen in pre-Skythian art (8th- 7th centuries BC). So the idea that the 'animal designs' in the Great Wall zone are all originated from Skythian art needs re-examination.
