Most Tang stories were written by literati, and the heroes in Tang stories can be regarded as the embodiment of literati. The attitude of the literati in the Tang dynasty towards love, marriage and official career finds an expression in Tang stories about love and hatred, meeting and parting of literati and prostitutes. As a fashion at that time, the literati in the Tang dynasty tended to fall in love with prostitutes to satisfy lust, vanity or emotional emptiness. This is the romantic and poetic aspect of their emotional pursuit. At the same time, because of the concept of class status, the literati in the Tang dynasty tended to choose marriage which was good for their fame. Falling in love with prostitutes was only a temporary dwelling though it was poetic, and only the tireless pursuit of fame was their real life.
