Ever since the birth of Homer’s epic, the theme of drift and drifters has been updating all the time its historical and social text. Based on his own experience, the Columbian writer Santiago Gamboa portraits in his novel El síndrome de Ulises the Ulysses and his voyage of our times. The novel can be read as a book of memory of the immigrants who came to European countries at the turn of the century due to wars or in search of more job opportunities. Also, it explores the homelessness and the sense of being away from home, which is depicted in the epic and James Joyce’s novel, and shared by any people of any country who strive to thrive in a bigger city, hoping that one day they will start a better life and their dreams will come true. All in all, it is an intertextual journey that allows the author to represent the thematic of drift and drifters in the contemporary context and achieve the resonance in all who find themselves involved in this ever-changing world.
