摘　　要：基于韩礼德体现人际功能的情态系统,探讨美国作家威廉·福克纳的短篇小说《干旱的九月》中词汇语法背后的语义层面,意在解释人物之间的人际关系,以及复杂的社会矛盾,从而进一步表明福克纳创作主题下人物身上的悲剧性成因。采用定量与定性相结合的方法,通过文本分析发现情态操作语、情态附加语和情态隐喻分布上的特点和量值上的差异,能充分反映小说中四个主要人物身上的“悲剧性”色彩。Based on Halliday’s modality system of embodying interpersonal functions,this paper explores the semantic meaning behind the lexical grammar in Arid September,a short story by American writer William Faulkner,in order to explain the interpersonal relations and complex social conflicts among the characters,and to disclose the causes of tragedies of the characters in his creation themes.This paper makes a text analysis by using quantitative and qualitative methods,and finds that the“tragedy”tint regarding the four main characters in the novel can be fully reflected by the distribution characteristics and magnitude differences in modal operators,modal adjuncts and modal metaphors.
