As a rejoinder to the current critical view of labeling McEwan’s Saturday as"9·11"novel,this paper argues that"9·11"attack and its related political concerns are not the ultimate pursuit of the novel. To a large extent,Saturday is a novel about the conflicts and integration of two cultures, namely science represented by a neurosurgeon Henry Perowne, and literature represented by his daughter Daisy.Metaphorically speaking, what science can do to humans’physical world is like what literature can work on their spiritual world. In doing so,McEwan revisits C.P.Snow and explores the possibility of complementarity of two cultures, despite of their seemingly exclusiveness.
