With the increasing occurrence of extreme climate events in recent years, more attention has been paid to the urban climate issues, such as urban heat island problem. However, at present, climate research results applied in urban planning practice is still limited. Local climate zone(LCZ) scheme, classifying the urban surface based on climate response ability, provides opportunity to connect the climate information and urban planning. Taking Wuhan as a case study, this research set up the urban LCZ map, and the zoning results is optimized and verified. Subsequently, the spatial distribution of LCZs and the characteristics of functional land use and urban morphology are analyzed. The results show that LCZ scheme can differentiate the urban thermal environment appropriately at local scale. The urban functional and morphology characteristics of LCZs show application potential and great value in climate sensitive urban planning and design.
