This paper aims at providing an overview of the Prohibition of the 1920s to 1930s in America and the resultant anti-Prohibition fictions. It briefly comments on the historical and cultural context of the Prohibition, followed by related discussions of Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby,Hemingway's The Sun Also Rises, and other novels which take Prohibition either as their themes or settings. It also brings into discussion two recent anti-Prohibition novels as contemporary reconsiderations of the past event. This paper is not an in-depth analysis of any particular novel, but it provides a general picture of the anti-Prohibition writings by American authors. It concludes by discussing the cultural significance of the fictional expressions of anti-Prohibition sentiments.
