Nanshoku(male homosexuality) originated from homoerotic relationships among monks in Buddhist monasteries, and it gradually became a part of the samurai culture after having penetrated into the samurai society through the aristocratic society. It ushered in its peak in the Warring States Period and the early Edo Period. However, the Nanshoku culture in the samurai society did not disappear with the destruction of the samurai class. Instead, it was inherited by the students in the Meiji Era. Taking Mori Ogai’s autobiographical novel Vita Sexualis as a clue, this paper attempts to reconstruct the Nanshoku culture among students in the Meiji Era and explore the logic of its existence through introducing the hero’s personal experiences.
