The stress wave propagation tests were carried out on the variable cross-sectional-area red sandstone specimen based on the coupled static-dynamic loading experimental apparatus. The effects of axial static stress on waveform, amplitude attenuation and frequency-dependence were investigated. The results showed that when the specimen was not in axial static stress, the stress wave was a compressive wave.As the axial static stress increased,a tensile wave appeared at the end of the unloading stage. At the same measuring point,as the axial static stress increased, the wave duration gradually narrowed.Under the same axial static stress increment, the amplitude gradually decreased with the increase of the propagation distance. The amplitude variation of stress wave attenuated exponentially with the increase of propagation distance. The spatial response intensity and spatial attenuation coefficient of amplitude gradually decreased with the increase of the axial pressure, and the decreasing rate gradually tended to be slow. The energy of stress wave was mainly concentrated in the low frequency range, and the effect of static stress on the low-frequency wave was obvious.
