摘　　要：根据新发现的中英文史料,综合已有研究成果,文章认为沈祖荣生于1887年,其籍贯今属重庆。在留学美国前,沈祖荣已经加入美国图书馆协会,是该会第一位中国籍会员。1914年8月2日,沈祖荣由上海乘坐日本轮船“丹波丸”赴美留学,1916年6月底参加美国图书馆协会年会后回国。归国后,沈祖荣巡回宣讲图书馆事业,其时间段并不仅限于1917-1919年。1925年前,沈祖荣与胡庆生各自或一起在全国14个城市进行了宣讲。《辞海》《中国大百科全书》中“沈祖荣”词条的生平部分亟待修订。According to some newly discovered Chinese and English historical materials and current research results,the article holds that Seng Tsu Yung,or Samuel Tsu Yung Seng,was born in 1887 in Chongqing.Before studying in the United States,Seng Tsu Yung had joined the American Library Association and was the first Chinese member of the Association.On August 2,1914,aboarding the Japanese ship"S.S.Tamba Maru",Seng Tsu Yung set out from Shanghai to study in the United States.He attended the annual meeting of the American Library Association at the end of June 1916 and then returned to China.After returning to China,Seng Tsu Yung's tour of publicizing librarianship was not limited to 1917-1919.Before 1925,Seng Tsu Yung and Thomas Ching-Sen Hu,separately or together,gave lectures in 14 important cities across China.The biographical parts of the entries"Seng Tsu Yung"in both Cihai and Encyclopedia of China need to be revised urgently.
