Natasha Trethewey, the two-time American poet laureate and winner of Pulitzer Prize for Poetry, has written on the inner life of the blacks living in the hinterland of the South. She employs the victim narrative to present history and gain sympathy and rights for the blacks, reconstructs history, and expresses her urgent ethnic and political appeal. This appeal, echoed in the repeated memory writing of trauma and decolonization, can not only interpret the current situation but also construct a community of such shared memory. History and memory complement each other in their interweaving into a poetic language beyond time and space. This article offers another approach to the understanding of the American South today by asking this question: How should one go beyond the limitations of victim identity and affirm common humanity?
