试论马弗尔的“植物之恋”与植物“缔国”

摘　　要：《致他娇羞的女友》是马弗尔最受关注的一首名诗,诗中的“植物之恋”一直以来是学界争议的一个焦点意象。现有的研究虽然从哲学、美学和植物学等方面进行了深入探讨,但由于对“植物之恋”所凭依的物质世界未加考察,也未将其置于英国的花园情结、植物书写以及殖民扩张语境中加以整体观照,故而遮蔽了“植物之恋”在异域空间的不断延伸,进而遮蔽了异域植物在大英帝国缔造中所发挥的重要作用,而这恰恰是马弗尔“植物之恋”背后的深层动因。本文拟从植物一词入手来阐明这一论点。“To His Coy Mistress”is Andrew Marvell’s most famous and most studied poem,whose core image,“vegetable love,”has been a focus of discussion for long.It has been explored from such perspectives as philosophy,aesthetics,and botanical studies.But since the material world that underlies the image has not been clarified,and the image itself has not been addressed in the context of English garden complex,plants writing,and colonial expansion,it is hard for one to notice the expansion of“vegetable love”,in foreign shores,and to reveal the important role that exotic plants play in the founding of the British empire.And this is exactly what motivates Marvell to coin this image“vegetable love.”This article is thus intended to shed some light on this point via plants.
