The Collector and The French Lieutenant’s Woman are by far the most celebrated novels of John Fowles,a British postmodern writer.Despite of the structural and contextual differences between the two novels, their common concern is the psychological crisis of modern men, namely, the divided self-an important yet long time neglected issue in Fowles’s novels. The self-crisis is represented by the disaccord between the ideal self and real self, the extrinsic behavior and intrinsic motivation, and the separation of love from desire. The protagonists in the two novels make self-perception and reconstruct their self through speech and action,so to make their freedom possible.
