In the Victorian period of England, governesses were on one hand a status symbol of the top middle class who imitated the aristocratic class, and they were on the other hand regarded as"the other"in the family by the middle and the upper classes.Under the historical and economic context in that period,it can be concluded that Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontёand Agnes Grey by Anne Brontёboth described the marginalized governesses,in order to deconstruct the power consciousness in British society and to refute the mercenary opinions on marriage holding by the middle and the upper classes.Through reconstructing the identity of governesses in these novels, the Brontёs showed the unique cultural meaning of governesses in Britain society during the nineteenth century, and expressed the hope of constructing their equal status.
