Pat Barker, an important contemporary British novelist, is one of the very few women writers who are famous for writing about war-engendered trauma. Through depicting the trauma from WWI, WWII and the post-war period as experienced by British people from different walks of life, Barker exposes a unique traumatic world and surveys the many problems tied to culture, society and family in war-ravaged Britain. Her novels suggest that individual traumatic memory will eventually evolve into collective traumatic memories of a nation, which cannot be erased by history. This article will explore the narrative of war-induced trauma in Barker’s war novels from the perspective of historical writing, traumatic memory and transmission of trauma.
