Louis Erdrich is one of the most famous contemporary writers in the United States. She has long been the focus of readers and critics.Love Medicine has been studied and discussed the most in all her works so far and thus taken as a masterpiece.Under the guidance of Karl Marx’s and Pierre Bourdieu’s class theories, this thesis interprets the working class problems implied in Love Medicine, and explores how Erdrich subtly expresses the class hierarchy, unemployment, poverty and tribal labor of the Chippewa people on the reservation,as well as how her characters are shaped by class.By doing so,the working class literary characteristics of Love Medicine and Erdrich’s intention to criticize the white colonists and the American government through Love Medicine are revealed. Finally,Erdrich’s resolution to awaken the contemporary Indians in the crisis of cultural identity and to reshape Indian history is demonstrated.
