摘　　要：《典型的美国佬》被称作华裔群体的《了不起的盖茨比》,小说描绘了拉尔夫·张、特蕾莎、老赵等人追寻美国梦的历程。本文从模范少数族裔的概念入手,探讨拉尔夫等人融入美国社会过程中的坚守与妥协。他们身上节俭、勤奋、团结等特质体现了传统的儒家思想,是对中国传统文化的传承。为了融入美国社会,他们的形象发生了改变,是对美国文化的妥协。在坚守与妥协中,模范少数族裔试图融入美国社会,融入的过程体现了华裔身份的矛盾性。拉尔夫既无法在血缘文化中找到归属感也无法真正融入美国文化。任璧莲通过消解种族边界的方式重新定义美国人。拉尔夫等华裔作为美国发展的参与者理应成为典型的美国佬。Typical American is regarded as Great Gatsby for Asian Americans.The novel depicted Ralph Chang’s,Teresa’s,and Old Chao’s pursuits of dream in America.From the perspective of model minority,the essay elaborates Ralph’s excellent qualities including obedience,hard-working and friendliness.The model minorities not only stick to the traditional Chinese culture,but also satisfy Americans’ expectations of Asian minorities.To integrate into American society,Ralph’s attitude towards American culture changed.The process of Ralph’s integration into American society is accompanied by insistence and compromise,during which model minority’s identity displays contradiction.They could neither find a sense of belonging in blood culture nor could they be embraced by Anglo-Saxon whites.By eliminating boundaries among different ethnicities,Gish Jen redefines American.Model minorities like Ralph are typical American.
