Memory", one of the core concepts of cultural studies, has opened up a brand new perspective on the study of women's literature. In the Meiji and Taisho periods, advanced civilization imported from Western Europe were much admired and adapted by the Japanese society;nevertheless, women were excluded from this campaign and the ideal of being "a virtuous wife and a loving mother" still prevailed. If "bearing and raising children" carries the memory of the body, then "being a virtuous wife and a loving mother" the memory of the mind. Denying the prescribed female role as a wife/mother playing the part of bearing and rearing children, woman writers at that time gave an affirmative narrative of "sex of the subject", which would fulfill one's desire. Breaking away from the shackles of conventional mindset which confined women to being an ideal wife/mother, female writers intended to, through their works, free and liberate women both physically and psychologically. However, such a literary liberation whose rebellious surface conceals a deep connotation destined for rebuilding the memory, psychologically and physically, of the subject, i.e., women.
