In our English daily communication, the listener understands the speaker’s true intentions and the meaning of the words sometimes, but he or shemisinterprets the speaker’s meaning for some purpose. This phenomenon is called Deliberate Misinterpretation. It’s an effective strategy. In English, people use deliberate misinterpretation to achieve communication goals and ensure the communication goes smoothly. The Face Theory and the Principle of Politeness provide the theoretical support for deliberate misinterpretation. To avoid getting the embarrassment,to save the listen’s face,to show the speaker’s politeness and to avoid getting humiliation are the main intention to use deliberate misinterpretation. This article explains the pragmatic motivation of deliberate misinterpretation by using situational examples in order to use deliberate misinterpretation in practice properly and improve the pragmatic ability.
