Objective To investigate the safety and feasibility of drinking a small amount of water during anesthesia recovery period for patients undergoing non-gastrointestinal surgery. Methods Totally 400 patients with patients with fully conscious, stable vital signs and normal deglutition reflex during anesthesia recovery period were randomly divided into the observation group and the control group, with 200 cases in each group. In the observation group,5 mL warm water was given by mouth using a disposable dropper. In the control groups, patients’lips were moistened by wet q-tips.The degree of thirst was evaluated by Numerical Rating Scale(NRS).The incidences of nausea and vomiting in the post-anesthesia care unit were compared between two groups. Results The degree of thirsty in the observation group was significantly lower than that in control group at 10 minutes,30 minutes and time of returning to the ward(P<0.05).There was no significant difference in the incidence of nausea and vomiting between two groups(P>0.05).Conclusion Under the condition of evaluation and emergency preparation,it is safe and feasible to drinking a small amount of water during anesthesia recovery period, which can help to relieve patients’thirst symptom and improve their postoperative comfort after non-gastrointestinal surgery.
