海盗精神与绅士风度:史蒂文森笔下人物形象的双重性探析

摘　　要：史蒂文森笔下的人物形象具有双重性,即海盗精神与绅士风度。人物性格双重性一方面折射出了英国国民性的本质,另一方面又超越了时代性和民族性,指向人性的本质。史蒂文森笔下人物的双重形象暴露了大英帝国由兴而衰时期的国民心理:人物的海盗精神旨在为大英帝国开辟海外疆土提供价值观的支撑;人物的绅士风度则是为大英帝国海外扩张披上了道德的外衣。但是,从更深刻的层面来看,史蒂文森笔下人物的双重形象实际上是对人性善恶的双重性和复杂性的隐喻化叙事。Characters in Stevenson’s novels possess the obvious duality of viking spirit and gentility.The duality of characters reflects the essence of Englishness on the one hand;on the other hand,it goes beyond Englishness to expose the essence of human nature.The duality of characters in Stevenson’s novels reveals the national psychology of the British Empire during its transitional period from prosperity to decline.The viking spirit of the characters aims to provide spiritual support for the British Empire to expand its overseas colonies,while the gentility of the characters serves as a moral garment to cover the rudeness of its oversea plundering.However,in essence,the duality of characters in Stevenson’s novels is a metaphorical narrative of the duality and complexity of human nature as a whole.
